David Chimino Obituary

Houghton: David F. Chimino, 93, of Houghton, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2019 at the Omega House in Houghton.

David was born in Atlantic Mine on February 18, 1926, the son of the late John and Amelia (Ciucci) Chimino. Following graduation from Jeffers High School in 1943, he graduated from Michigan Tech in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Later, he also earned his Masters Degree from Michigan Tech.

Professor Chimino retired in 1988 after teaching Physics and Astronomy for 42 years at MTU. In the fifth year of his career, he was awarded Michigan Tech's Distinguished Teacher Award. By tradition it is granted once to a professor in a lifetime. In 1983 he was the first to receive a newly created rank of Presidential Professor for outstanding teaching. Since 1982 he had been actively involved in science lectures for the general public in what has been called the Cosmic Journey. He was well known for his ability to draw a perfect circle freehand.

On June 22, 1985 he was united in marriage to Eva (Perfetti) Harry.

David was a lifelong member of Saint Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Atlantic Mine. Following the closing of that church, he joined the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock. For 26 years he often read to the patients at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock. He was also involved in the local prison visitation and ministry at Camp Kitwan.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Michael Carne; a sister Josephine Haber; and a nephew, Gordon Haber.

He is survived by his wife, Eva of Houghton; 4 children: Judy Carne of Dollar Bay, Tom Harry of Houghton, Carol (John) Desiatto of Calumet, and Lori Adams of Chesapeake, Virginia; grandchildren Michele (Rev. Michael) Mannisto, Kristin (Scott) Pilgrim, Christina (Dan) Holcomb, Jessica Adams, Olivia Adams, and Emily Adams; great-grandchildren Isaac, Alexander, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Jacob, Liam, and Sophie; by nieces Mary (Jack) Licht and Barbara Anderson, and many other family members and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at the Church of the Resurrection with Reverend Father William Ssozi to officiate. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
