Bradford “Brad” Tchida Obituary

First Sergeant Bradford “Brad” James Tchida, U.S. Army (Retired), 71, of Hancock, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer on April 27, 2026. He was born October 8, 1954, in Tacoma, Washington, to Gerald and the late Shirley (Keski) Tchida of Hancock, Michigan.

 

After graduating Hancock Central High in 1972, Brad enlisted in the United States Army.

He proudly served his country for over 22 years, which took him across four continents and seven states. Brad ended his career as the first sergeant for Fort McCoy’s U.S. Army Garrison. In addition to the responsibilities as a first sergeant, he served as senior ROTC instructor, assistant commandant of a noncommissioned officers academy, platoon and team sergeant and squad leader for numerous infantry units. A decorated soldier, he received four awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, two awards of the Army Commendation Medal, two awards of the Army Achievement Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal for helping evacuate refugees from Vietnam.

 

Brad married his high school sweetheart Edith M. Burrous on August 18, 1973. They shared almost 56 wonderful years together.

 

Brad is survived by his father: Gerald Tchida; his wife: Edith; his children: Jennifer Tchida, Matthew (Bailey Ross) Tchida and Tiffany (Joseph) Burda; his grandchildren: Izak Tchida, Mattie (Andy Mosqueda) Burda-Mosqueda, Eleanor Tchida, Emerie Burda, Isla Burda, Sawyer Ross and Gracyn Tchida; his siblings: Michael (Debby) Tchida, Gregory (Annette) Tchida and Lori (Jeff) Budweg; his nieces and nephews: Miranda Budweg, Kayla Tchida, Brody Budweg and Trevor Tchida; his great niece and nephew Adeline and Rhyatt; his best friend Michael “Fuzzy” (Kathy) Frenette, along with many other friends.

 

Brad was preceded in death by his mother Shirley Tchida.

 

The family would like to express their appreciation to Lexi and Stephanie at Aspirus Hospice for the care and comfort they provided Brad and his family.

 

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for Brad will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 11am at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock with Father Corey Litzner officiating. There will be a visitation for an hour before the service at the church with a luncheon following the service. Interment with military honors at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton conducted by the Copper County Veterans Association. Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to American Legion Post #186 in memory of Brad Tchida.
