Caroline Hitch

January 27, 2023

Caroline Hitch, age 89, of Hancock, MI, passed away January 27, 2023, at Keweenaw Aspirus Hospital, Calumet, MI, under the loving care of the nursing staff and in the presence of her four daughters.

Caroline was born to Elsie and Matti Haanpaa on August 6, 1933 in Pequaming, MI. She graduated from L’Anse High School and through a distance learning correspondence, earned a diploma from the Chicago School of Interior Design. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Hitch, and celebrated their 50-year anniversary just prior to his passing.

After spending their first years of marriage in Paris, France, Caroline and Bob made their home in Hancock. Later she supported the start of Hitch Engineering as the company's first business manager. Caroline was a member and actively involved with the Hancock First United Methodist Church and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She loved decorating and gardening and was known to have shoveled more than her share of snow. She loved the outdoors and the fresh air of the Copper Country.

Caroline is survived by her four daughters, Linda (Scott) Gunner, Peggy Hitch, Susan (Patrick) Baldwin, and Lisa Hitch, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

A private service will be held at O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Lindenberg to officiate. A private spring burial will take place at L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.
