David Martin Hines, age 60, died unexpectedly last week while visiting the Galapagos Islands. Dave loved being outdoors and camped and fished across the state. He moved to the Keweenaw with his wife Mary Beth because “there are more trees than people." Although he enjoyed traveling across the world to see animals in their natural habitat, his favorite place was a chair by the campfire at Lake Medora. Dave measured his success not by titles or possessions, but by how many people he introduced to the great outdoors. He will be remembered for his kindness, his tenderhearted manner, and his never-ending need for "just one more cast." Dave is survived by his wife Mary Beth, parents Martha (Don) Hines, siblings Sharon Basel, Debra (John) Calcaterra, and Douglas (Amy) Hines, as well as multiple nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his father David Seelye. A private remembrance will take place in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.org) or Camp UPeninsulin - Type 1 Diabetes Camp Upper Michigan (campupeninsulin.com)
