James Witting Obituary

Chassell: James Howard Witting, 82, of Chassell, passed away at Garden View Assisted Living Facility in Calumet on Monday, March 3, 2025.

He was born on October 21, 1942 in Hancock, a son of the late John A. and Mary (Klarich) Witting. Following graduation from Hancock High School in 1961, Jim entered the United States Navy, serving for 2 years on active duty. He then attended Suomi College for 2 year and later transferred to Northern Michigan University in Marquette, first receiving his Bachelors Degree in Education and then his Masters Degree. He was a teacher for over 30 years, 2 years in Wisconsin and then in the Marquette Schools until his retirement in 1998.

Jim married Sandra Sorvisto on July 29, 1967 at the former Saint Joseph-St. Patrick Church in Hancock.

After retirement and living in Marquette, the couple wintered in Florida. Jim was an avid golfer and enjoyed biking about 5 miles a day. For the past 5 years they made their home in Chassell.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Chad; his twin brother, George, twin brothers John “Jocko” and Albert; and a sister Carol.

He is survived by his wife Sandy of Chassell; a son, Jason Witting of Minnesota; 2 grandchildren, Alexys and Aydan of Minnesota; a brother, Bruce; a sister, Peggy Ylitalo; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 6, 2025 at Section 11 of Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock with military honors conducted by the Copper Country Veterans Association.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to Little Brothers~Friends of the Elderly or to Saint Vincent DePaul in Hancock.
