Joann Kriege Obituary

Hancock: Joann Marie Kriege, 88, of Hancock, passed away at her home on Friday evening, November 3, 2023.

Joann was born on August 17, 1935 in Athens, Wisconsin, the second of ten children of Florence (Chamberlain) and John Schaetzl. She entered the Sisters of the Divine Savior religious order in 1952 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and left the community in 1966. She received her BA in Philosophy from Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1960 and her MA in Philosophy from Marquette University in 1968.

She was united in marriage to Raymond Kriege in 1968, then moved to Houghton and later to Hancock.

She is survived by her children Juliann (Patrick) Heller and William (Teri) Kriege, and 5 grandchildren: Benjamin, Samuel, and Eleanor Heller, and Xavier and Naomi Kriege. She is also survived by 6 brothers: John “Jack”, Dale, Lawrence, Richard, Roger, and Randall; and a sister, Diann Schilling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, sister Gloria Jean, brother Robert, and sisters-in-law Marlene (Robert) Schaetzl and Avery (Dale) Schaetzl.

From Joann, “I wish to thank my loving, very special husband, my children, their spouses, and my grandchildren for their love and for the joy they have brought into my life. My family, friends, and faith community have given me a glimpse of the love and goodness of God, and I thank them.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, November 13, 2023 at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, concelebrated by Reverend Father Corey Litzner and Reverend Father Corbin Eddy.

Friends may call at the church on Sunday, November 12, 2023 from 4 until 7 P.M. where a brief parish prayer service will be held at 6 P.M., with time for sharing stories and memories of Joann to follow. Visitation will also be held on Monday for an hour before the mass, from 10 until 11 A.M. at the church. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
