Margaret M. Cuffe

Hancock: Margaret M. (Houle) Cuffe, 102, of Hancock, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at Canal View – Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

She was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Hancock, (the only one of the 12 Houle children born in a hospital) on September 4, 1921 to the late Wilfred and Anna M. (Drouin) Houle and graduated from Hancock High School in 1939. In 1958 she began working as a nurse's aid at St. Joseph Hospital in Hancock. After several years, she was asked to do private duty nursing and continued doing that for 17 years.

She married James A. Cuffe on March 16, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan. They were married for 60 years before his passing in September of 2003. While dating, they enjoyed the life of riding Indian and Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

At 55 years old, she decided to learn cross country skiing with Jim and had special memories and fun with her brother, Joe Houle, skiing at Swedetown Creek. At age 59, she decided to try her hand at oil painting and enjoyed it fully. She had happy times with all the “gals” at her niece Lori Sleeman's art classes in Trimountain. She also loved antique and furniture shopping with her best friend, Shirley Kauppi.

Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by all of her 11 brothers and sisters. She is survived by seven children: Suzanne, Patrick, Michael, James, Sharon, Jerry, and Peggy; and by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Interment will take place in the spring at Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock. There will be no visitation.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to Little Brothers~Friends of the Elderly or St. Vincent De Paul Society in Hancock.

A special thank you to the staff at Canal View in Hancock as they gave excellent care to Margaret. A special recognition to Aleshia and Mary and the team at their activities department. Her family will never forget the special attention, especially for her birthdays when they brought her to the lake so she could put her feet into the water.
