Ruth E. Johnson

Ripley: Ruth E. Johnson, 93, of Ripley, passed away early on Wednesday morning, December 2, 2015 at U.P. Health System-Portage Hospital.

She was born on March 16, 1922 in Ripley, a daughter of the late Axel and Sanna "Susie" (Johnson) Virenius. She attended Ripley schools through 10th grade, and then graduated from Hancock High School in 1940. She was a resident of Ripley much of her life.

On November 21, 1942 she married Clyde Johnson of Lake Linden at the Rectory of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden. He passed away on January 2, 2012.

Ruth was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed serving on the election boards for both Franklin Township and for Hancock Public Schools. She also enjoyed canning vegetables from the family garden and listening to old country music on the radio, especially Dick Storm's Country Hall of Fame.

Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Rodney Johnson in 1982, a sister, Sylvia Kotila, and a brother Toivo Virenius.

She is survived by two sons both of Ripley: Mark (Vicki Paavo) Johnson and Kenneth (Carla) Johnson; three grandchildren: Ryan (Jennifer) Johnson, Zachary Johnson, and Haile Johnson; 3 great-grandchildren: Matthew, Katie, and Alex; former daughter-in-law Mary Katzke; a sister-in-law, Grace Ala of Laurium; and by several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock with Rev. Fr. William Ssozi to officiate. Spring burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. before the mass.
