Theodore "Ted" Monticello

Hancock: Theodore "Ted" Monticello, age 78, of Quincy Hill, well known local business owner, passed away peacefully, at his home, on Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
     He was born on April 10, 1943, a son of Albert and Bruna (DeCesare) Monticello.  He attended Hancock High School where he played football.  He was proud to be a Bulldog and graduated in 1960.  He served on the Teen Center Board.  In 1958, he started at Conway's Fine Foods as a stock-boy.  He bought the store in 1983 and it became Monticello's Grocery.  He retired in December of 2012.  They were known for their meat counter and spaghetti sauce.
     Ted was married to Arlene Jarvi on June 12, 1965 at the Franklin Street Apostolic Lutheran Church.
     Ted was in the U.S. Navy, serving as a cook aboard the USS Richard E. Byrd.  He had been a member of Mount Carmel Catholic Church where he was a proud and dedicated Altar Boy.  He was a member of the Quincy-Franklin Volunteer Fire Department from 1968 to 1983 where he served as the secretary.  He was a member of the Alfred Erickson American Legion Post 186 of Hancock and the Hancock Elks club.  He played baseball for the Midway and Monte Carlo baseball teams.
     He was proud of his Italian heritage and proud to be a "Quincy Hill boy."  He enjoyed entertaining at his home.  As their families were growing up, they enjoyed get togethers with Pat and Jan Campioni, every Sunday.  
     Ted loved dancing and 60's rock-n-roll music and polkas.  He loved football and was a big Packer fan.  He enjoyed watching the games on Sunday with all of his family, especially his  grandson, Max, who he taught the game of football to, and passed on family traditions.
     He was preceded in death by-his parents, brothers-David and Eugene, a nephew-Jeffrey, and brother-in-law-Bill Jarvi.
     Ted is survived by: his wife-Arlene; 6 children-Maureen McCloskey of California, Annette (Greg) Tchida of Hancock, Tony Monticello of Hancock, Teddy Monticello (O'Neil Beckford) of Florida, David Monticello of Hancock, and Danielle (Josh) Bennett of Arizona; grandchildren-Dana, April, Kayla, Trevor, Mark, Max, and Elliot; 4 great-grandchildren-Juniper, Eleanor, Kaylee, and Jemma; grandpups-Thor, Hank, and Milo; close friends-Sandee and Dave Aldrich and Donald Anderson; sisters-in-law-Shirley (Buddy) Holquist, Pat (Doug) Viola and Reggie Jarvi; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  A special thanks to the Junti family for being very special neighbors.

     The funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hancock with Pastor Jesse Aho to officiate.  Visitation will be at the church, from 10 until 11:00 A.M. before the funeral.  Burial will be at the Forest hill Cemetery in Houghton with Military Rites.  The O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock is in charge of arrangements.
