Virginia Alice Monroe, 87, a resident of Hancock peacefully passed away August 28, 2015 at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility.
She was born on November 10, 1927 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, daughter of the late George Ambrose and Marie Anna (Groleau) Whittemore.
Virginia was a graduate of Lawrence High School and earned a two year degree in Accounting at Bentley School of Accounting and Finance, Waltham, Massachusetts. Upon graduating she worked at Patton’s Restaurant in Boston, Massachusetts as their bookkeeper and office manager.
On August 29, 1948 she married David Miller Monroe. She moved to Hancock in 1963 with her former husband. She was active in the Hancock Civic League, Portage View Hospital Guild, Portage Lake Operation Friendship, and as a Welcome Wagon Hostess. Her career as Executive Director of the Houghton Housing Commission lasted many years and she enjoyed her work and time spent with the residents.
Virginia supported her children in their activities, was a Cub Scout Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America and President, Cookie Sales Chairman, and Brownie leader for the Portage Lake Area Girl Scout Council. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and was very active with the Quilters. She volunteered at the Mommy, Daddy, and Me Playgroups and became known by many children as "Grandma Finger Jell-O".
Her love of white daisies with yellow centers was forever on her mind and she was always observant of the wild daisies around the area. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening, crocheting, and various arts & crafts. Virginia was a wonderful cook and baker for her family and friends over the years.
Virginia is survived by her four children, Judith (Dale) Harkonen of Houghton, V. Marie Anderson (Jerry Peterson) of Marquette, Suzanne Monroe of Texas, David R. (Paula) Monroe of Atlantic Mine; her grandchildren, James, Stephanie, Daniel, Matthew, Andrew, Shiloh, and another granddaughter; a great granddaughter Savannah Jean; and her faithful dog and companion Bailey.
She was preceded in death by her 3 half-brothers, George, Ernest, and Raymond Batal.
Funeral service for Virginia will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell with Pastor Joe Iverson to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock.
Friends may call on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 from 10 a.m. until time of service at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church,
