Hancock: Bruce D. Mitchell, 82, of Hancock, passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Lighthouse at Hancock.

     He was born on July 15, 1934 in Hancock to the late George and Lyle (Crowley) Mitchell and was a graduate of Hancock Central High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving for 2 years including overseas duty in Germany from 1957 to 1959.

     He was employed at the Quality Super Market in Hancock, and worked as a projectionist at both the Pic Theater in Hancock and the Lode Theater in Houghton. He drove truck for Morning Glory Dairy for a time before going to work at the Copper Range Railroad as a dispatcher in the accounting department. Later he was transferred to  their machine shops in Painesdale where he worked as their purchasing agent. When the machine shops closed, he joined the Community Action Agency, eventually becoming the weatherization project director for fifteen years, retiring in 1999.

     On June 24, 1961 he married Janice Kay Bailey at the Albert Paine Methodist Church in Painesdale. They were married for 49 years before she preceded him in death on July 31, 2010.

     Bruce enjoyed trap shooting and scuba diving. He was also very handy when it came to fixing or building something by hand. He built the family's first camping trailer, log splitter, and wood stove. He also enjoyed photography, taking many pictures and developing them in his own darkroom.

     He is survived by his daughter, Tammy Mitchell of Hancock, a niece, and a nephew.

     Graveside services will be held later at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton conducted by the Copper Country Veterans Association.

     Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Copper Country Veterans Association in the name of Bruce Mitchell.
