Hancock: Mary L. Hookana, 55, of Hancock, passed away on Wednesday morning, October 28, 2015 at the Omega House in Houghton following a year long battle with cancer.
She was born in Calumet on November 18, 1959 to the late Carl and Harriet (Zuvich) Hookana. She graduated from high school in Oak Creek, Wisconsin in 1976. She was an insurance underwriter for a time in West Bend, Wisconsin. Later she was employed locally at the family business, the Drift Inn, in Copper City. She had also volunteered at the Omega House, and had recently helped at a short term mission project in North Dakota. Samora, her Arabian horse, was the joy of her life for over 20 years.
Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hancock. She helped with their annual rummage sales, book sales, and UMW pasty sales.
Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Sandra; step-father William R. Wagner; and brothers-in-law, John Peschman and Larry Ochowicz.
She is survived by three sisters: Margaret Peschman of L'Anse, Carol Ochowicz of Adell, WI, and Katherine Hookana of Hancock; a brother, John (Bettie) Hookana of Marquette; a step-brother, Bruce (Pat) Wagner of Gratiot Lake; and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Amy Terhune to officiate. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
