Marquette: Matt H. Waisanen, 87, formerly of the Copper Country, now residing at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at U.P. Health System Marquette Hospital.

     He was born on April 30, 1929 at Franklin Mine Location to the late Alexander and Irma (Halvari) Waisanen and attended the Highway Location School. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, being awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received in combat.

    Following his discharge from the service, he lived for a time in California and Iowa before returning to live in Paavola and Ahmeek. He was employed at the Keweenaw

Mountain Lodge as a grounds keeper until his retirement. He later lived at the Laurium Senior Housing.

     Matt enjoyed trapping muskrats, fishing, and bowling.

        Besides his parents,he was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Waisanen; sisters Sandra (Kenneth) Kotajarvi and Ruth Waisanen; brother-in-law, Thomas Kaipio; sister-in-law, Rebecca Waisanen; and his special friend, Helen Lahti.

     He is survived by his siblings: Marion Kaipio of Boston Location, Marvin Waisanen (Audrey Haataja) of Laurium, Helen (Donald) Waarala of Niagra, WI, and John Waisanen of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Margaret Waisanen of Calumet; family friend, Bernard Deziel of Hancock, and by many nieces and nephews.

     Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Waasa Cemetery with the Copper Country Veterans association conducting military honors. There will be no visitation or services at this time.
