Hancock: Richard Gartner Kahn, 79, well known former Hancock business owner, passed away at his home on Tuesday morning, August 25, 2015.

     He was born in Hancock on May 17, 1936, the son of the late Norbert and Jean (Gartner) Kahn. He was a 1955 graduate of Hancock High School, later earning his B.A. Degree from Michigan State University in 1959. As a young man, he belonged to the Hancock troop of Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He also served his country in the Michigan National Guard and the United States Army before and during the Berlin crisis of 1961 and 1962.

     On December 26, 1961 he married Roberta Susan “Bobbie” Kulbarsh in Glencoe, Illinois. After living in Seattle for a time, the couple returned to live in Hancock where Richard became the 4th generation owner and operator of Gartner's Department store until his retirement. Bobbie passed away on June 15, 2015.

     Richard was a member of Temple Jacob in Hancock. He was granted a lifetime membership to the beagle club in Lake Linden. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, deer hunting, and rabbit hunting with his beagles. He enjoyed the family cottage at Lake Gerald, ATV riding, and trips to Florida.

     Besides his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Kahn, a niece Kathy Berggren, and pet dog, Susie.

     He is survived by his son, Larry (Cindy) Kahn of Londonderry, NH; grandchildren Joshua and Rebecca; a sister, Marjorie (Daniel) Druckman of Potomac, MD; a nephew, James; cousins, other relatives, neighbors, many friends, and pet dogs Bella and Scarlet.

     Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at the O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock with Rabbi David Friedman of Rochester, Minnesota to officiate. Burial services will take place on Monday at 10 A.M. at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.

     Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 12 noon until the 3 P.M. time of services.

     In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Ronald Kahn Scholarship Fund at the Hancock Public Schools Foundation, 501 Campus Drive, Hancock, MI 49930.
